Expanding EvE

Welcome to the eighth installment of the EVE Blog Banter , the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. This month’s topic comes to us from me, Ga’len at The Wandering Druid of Tranquility.  He asks: “What new game mechanic or mechanics would you like to see created and brought into the EVE Online universe and how would this be incorporated into the current game universe?  Be specific and give details, this is not meant to be a ‘nerf this, boost my game play’ post like we see on the EVE forums.”

So what would I do?

I would add Terraforming

Terraforming (literally, “Earth-shaping”) of a planet, moon, or other body is the hypothetical process of deliberately modifying its atmosphere, temperature, surface topography or ecology to be similar to those of Earth to make it habitable by humans.” ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terraforming

The ability to shape, change and affect the environment in EvE is something that many EvE veterans would like to be able to do.  Establishing a mechanism to allow players to not only change the planet but make use of the non inhabited planets and their resources.

The mechanics involved are many.  The skills set is probably quite large as well.  This is definitely leaning towards and industry type of players but it would give these types of players something to shoot for rather than just mine Veldspar.  Without the builders we have no ships to fly, and that half of the equation is sadly overlooked most of the time.

The fighting that would ensue over planet X, that has a 30% boost to industry build times, while anchored in a  POS within ZZZ system, would make combat not only necessary but rewarding as well.

So, in short, make the industry guys a new mechanic and reap the rewards in ships being built.

The mechanics of terraforming lend themselves to a growing system ( such as EvE ) and therefore I think would grant the  Scalability needed by a growing game.  “scalability is a desirable property of a system, a network, or a process, which indicates its ability to either handle growing amounts of work in a graceful manner, or to be readily enlarged.” ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalability

Why Scale?  Well aside from the ability to add content without crashing the nodes, the ability for an idea to build upon itself and grow is vital for EvE.

The focus here is to icrease the number of people who play and to allow EvE players to affect an environment over time ( I.e. it takes 1 month to terraform an existing habitable system to allow for more population.

So am I off my rocker here?  Lemme know what you think?

  1. Oh dear, if this ever happens following WiS I think I'll quit RL and become Treenara Mazouk World Shaper! Can't wait to get to do this! Eh what, it's still implemented. Ah darn! :p

  2. Moo II – absolutely. Nothing like using the Bulrathi to crush the Psilons and steal their technology… despite them being 10 levels ahead in tech across the board. You might take a planet off me, but I can guarantee I'll take in back… heh heh heh…

    But absolutely, the ability to improve a planet and/or system over time would be a fantastic addition to WH space. Sleeper incursions might be a way of bringing some balance (as a thought).

    Base skills would probably lever off astrogeology and/or anchoring (for the terraforming modules) at a guess.

    I can't imagine the political playing field in high sec would allow improvement without State control (and/or taxing you till your ears bleed).

    Very interesting idea though!

  3. Developing resources within sovereign space would definitely be cool. It should require logistics to maintain and provide bonuses such that a small tightly focussed empire can be as powerful as a widely spread one.
