'Thor' the Minmatar T3 ~ Banter #11

Welcome to the eleventh installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed here. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

This month’s banter comes to us from Joe Brusati a long time reader of CrazyKinux’s Musing, who asks the following: CCP states that T3 Strategic Cruisers are just the start for the T3 line-up. In future Eve expansions what would you like to see as the next T3 ship type. Please be specific on details about what role this ship would play, cost of manufacturing, and the different modules that would be available for it, and of course you must give your T3 ship a name!

Ship class: Battleship

Ship Name: ‘Thor’

Race Type: Minmatar

Ship Bonus: 5% Damage to Large Projectile Turrets, 5% bonus to armor amount per level of battleship.

Drone Bandwidth: 50MB

Special Ability: 50KM Webbing  Sphere or Interdiction sphere like the cruiser interdiction sphere version in size but can have the webber effect/or the interdiction effect…warping is still possible with the web and MWD still possible with the interdiction effect.

Modules: 6 Module slots ( one more than the 5 on Strategic Cruisers now)  Propulsion, Engineering, Offensive, Defensive, Electronics, and the new one Drone Module plug in

  • Base Slot layout : 6 High slots, 5 Middles slots, 6 Low slots, with the same module changes as in the T3 cruisers.

Drone Modules:

  • Drone extender 15% bonus to  Drone Range per level.
  • Drone Adaptive Armor 5% bonus to Drone Armor/Shielding per level.
  • Drone Maneuverability 7.5 % bonus to Drone agility and speed per level.
  • Drone Firepower Augmentation 7.5 % bonus to Drone damage per level.

Role:

  • Strategic system interdiction.  Meant to take punishment and able to launch light &  medium drones and Fight back with large caliber weaponry.
  • Able to emit warp interdiction fields and stasis webbifier fields, 50KM in size.

Drawbacks:

  • Works on both friend and foe alike.  Those stuck inside the spheres suffer the same effects as enemies.
  • Cannot be repaired by others, while field is active ( as is currently the case)

Manufacturing:

  • These ships would use the same parts and pieces that the T3 Cruisers use.
  • An increase in demand of T3 ships ( and the parts needed for them would help drive the T3 cruisers price down)

Discussion points:

  • This ship would be the “heavy battleship  interdictor”.  Like it’s smaller cousins it would need to be able to survive a DD or two (depending on skill/setup.
  • The addition of drones to this battleship would mean that it can fend off a cruiser or frigate, but not become a DPS machine.
  • With the proliferation of Capitals, something needs to be brought online to allow a ship to survive an attack.
  • This ship is an illustration…I think there should be one version of these for the 4 races..the Bandwidth for drones etc should be altered to allow for Gallenete ships to use more drones, as is sometimes their desire.
  • Why do we need a bigger interdictor?  Good question, the current crop of cruisers do indeed kick butt, I simply love the broadsword . However against a large capital fleet these crumble easily enough. Remote reppers do not work, while the bubble is up, meaning once your primaried, you are done, there is not coming back.
  • I want to push Battleships to T3 levels, that makes the ‘cookie cutter’ approach to fleets more dynamic, more difficult as well to defend against but in the end isn’t it all about blowing ships to pieces?

The T3 ships have started to filter into combat.  I have seen a Proteus, and several Tengu’s, no Loki’s or the Amarr varients yet…but prices have dropped steadily and hopefully will stabilize BELOW 200M.

We shall see what comes of this though…allowing another variant that uses same peices and parts will only increase the proliferation of T3.

I hear you but manasi, but manasi, won’t that make battleships overpowered?  Perhaps, but I think not, it would make them a mean ship to be sure, and while I am very favorable towards them I always wished I had drones to be able to drop them on frigs/cruisers…however in the current cruiser configuration that would make them, IMO overpowered…so up the class to Battleship, was my thought.

  1. Increasing demand drives prices up, not down. But always glad to see more Minmatar ideas!

  2. Well, I'm not that knowledgeable about tackling tactics, etc…but even despite that fact, sounds like an excellent idea. A tackler like this would be a pretty good thing to have in large battles I'd assume. Though, the stasis web bubble would scare me a bit if I was on your team…I hate going slow, lol.

  3. So, this is a big tackler meant to withstand a few doomsdays in Capital-heavy 0.0, right? Like a HIC on steroids, with plenty of nifty gadgets.

  4. I see your love for battleships coming through Manasi. Interesing idea though. While not exactly your Idea, i like what bruts said about a 50 km Jam bubble : ) Enemy fleet warps in and you drop a bubble jamer and hictor ontop of them.

  5. I don't think T3 BS-es like this would be overpowered, but I highly doubt ANYONE would use the Thor as you describe it. Here's why:

    – 50% webification sphere that works on all ships – for starters, it's only web, not warp disruption… which means enemy ships caught in the bubble but not scrammed will be able to GTFO even faster in case they get called secondary before they get called primary (in which case caldari gangmembers start lobbing missiles at him/her).

    – Can't be remote repped when bubble is active. If this is true, then even if you have a mega-buffer like the damnation (or even more), but no capital-like rep capabilities, you're still a BS and will pop in a few salvos from an enemy BS fleet when called primary.

    – MEDIUM drones as primary weaponry on a multi-billion isk BS hull (btw, web sphere should also work on drones… sentry stealth-boost ftw)

I don't know if you intended to propose the other races' t3 BS have the same role (webification sphere projector), but the web is specific to the Minmatar – in which case the Gallente one would be a truly giant 50km interdiction bubble projector (now THIS would be OP), the Amarr one would project an Energy Neutralizer Bubble affecting everyone (also incredibly silly) and the caldari one – a mega jammer to jam whole fleets?

Also (and at this point I'm seriously rambling), on HIC's there are focusing scripts… so, anyone, 100km web, 200km focused interdiction (a.k.a. "titan logoffski generator"), 200km mega-neutralizer anyone?
