BB25 What sov changes will come?

Welcome to the twenty-fifth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. This month’s topic comes to us from @Tetraetc – “Tetra’s EVE Blog” – who asks: “Have Alliances and the sovereignty system limited the amount of PVP and RP potential in Null sec? Imagine a Null Sec where anyone could build outposts wherever. Would the reduction of the alliance game mechanic, and the removal of the sovereignty game mechanics (or the modification of it from Alliance level to Corp level for that matter) force more PVP into Null sec, or would giant power blocs like the NC still form themselves?”

The simple answer is that any change to the existing Sov probably would improve things for PvP.

The more complicated answer:

People will group together.  No matter what you do, people ( with the same ideas goals etc) will certainly get together to work cooperatively towards a common goal.  Trying to drive people apart is IMO the idea that “blob” warfare is bad.  Certainly fighting a huge group when you are small is tactically VERY difficult.  I have been in some HUGE fights and with everything else being equal, lag around the node is a bigger issue. SO the lag ( missile spam etc) is the determining factor currently with warfare ( ie. who can outlag the other guy)  That is NOT PvP that is simply using a system that cannot handle the load and applying pressure so that it breaks in the way that is favorable to you.  Simple as that he who generates the moat load and is in the system first can normally win.

Corp Wallets:

Some Corporations frankly are not rich enough entities, to be able to hold space, and if they are they will not stay that way for long.  Holding SOV in a single system that has an i-hub at level 5 with Everything in it ( including cyno jammers and cyno generators ) will run you aprox 1.5 B per month, per system.

Limited PvP:

The question has 1 flaw though ” the limited amount of PvP”? What the hell is @Tetraetc on about.  You may certainly have to go to the “border region” where your power end s and another power begins…my only thought is that he is in the NC and he may live at the center of the homogeneous group there ( which typically does not in-fight…no blue on blue) so they have to go to where the “fights are at” and that may be some distance away.

Game mechanics do not change the way people play:

One thing to note is that there is no mechanic for “coalitions” ( aside from being “blue” to someone), yet larger groups of alliances have formed even larger entities known as coalitions, without any game mechanic at all.

In the end it comes down to this: ” force through superior lag potential” when it should be “force through superior firepower.”

Building an outpost somewhere is a “pie in the sky” concept without enough firepower/current lag power to defend it.

Could a proposed change help?  Hell yes… it would sure warrant a looking at, the current system is such a frigging waste of time people have developed warfare tactics that DO NOT target SOV structures, just because it is a  huge pain in the ass, anytime people  avoid shooting structures, you will also limit the PvP to a degree.  If you force the people holding the system to retreat and wait for the money to go away then you can shoot structures till whenever and reclaim the space that way.

  1. Just to be clear… the idea for this question came from a forum post I read… But I agree… I dont think it limits PVP either… as said in my blog on the topic
